Visit to Prayas (NGO), Jaipur
The students of M.Sc, IVth semester visited the organization “Prayas”, located in Jhalana Institutional area, Jaipur on 24th February 2016. A total of 9 students escorted with Archana Kumari, Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Development, Home Science, explored the information regarding its organization structure; services provided; beneficiaries and other aspects.
All the information was provided to the students by Mr. R.K.Mohla, Honorary Secretary of the organisation, staffs, teachers and trainers, the Admin Incharge of the Organisation.
Prayas began its fight for human dignity on 17 July 1996 as the first vocational institute for the mentally and physically challenged. Soon after, it was also the first integrated school for children in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Prayas works for the education, rehabilitation and empowerment of the mentally and physically challenged (differently-able) and socially disadvantaged children. It is a non-profit, Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). It indirectly serves over 20,000 families in the community through different activities: health camps, adult education, vocational training, BAL clubs and community services. It is registered with Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Societies Registration Act, 1958, Foreign Contribution Regulation Act, 1976 (Reg. No. 125560127), National Institute of Open Schooling, Rajasthan Education Board, Rehabilitation Council of India and Indira Gandhi National Open University. The mission of Prayas is mission is the integration of children, with and without special needs, into mainstream schooling and society by providing quality education to enable their growth and development towards becoming self-sufficient individuals who can live with dignity.
The services include facilitating Inclusive Education (Education for all),enhancing skills of differently-able children and develop a positive attitude towards self-reliance, providing income generating projects that will enable differently-able needs adults to become economically self-sufficient. It also develops strategies for marketing the products made by the physically and mentally disabled so that their income can be ensured. It advocates and network with governmental and non-governmental institutes for child rights. It develops a resource centre in accordance with special needs in changing environment. It creates awareness in the community to participate in child education and to fight for child rights.
The students visited the centre and interacted with the staff, and students. There were many students getting education through NIOS and IGNOU. Students of Prayas also exhibited their talents such as singing, dancing and drawing. They were outstanding in spite of being differently abled. They also prepare their case studies.
