Visit to the Organization for Children with Special Needs “Disha”

 

The students of M.Sc, IVth semester and B.Sc VIth semester visited the organization “Disha”, located in Nirman Nagar-C, Jaipur, Rajasthan 302019, on 18th February 2016. A total of 17 students escorted with Archana Kumari and Chanchal Sinha, Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Development, Home Science, explored the information regarding its organization structure; services provided; beneficiaries and other aspects.

All the information was provided to the students by Ms. Nisha jain, the Admin Incharge of the Organisation.

Disha is a resource center for multiple disabilities founded in the year 1999 by Mrs. Prabha Mehta a writer, academician and social activist. DISHA is the first organization in Rajasthan to provide comprehensive and wide range of services to children with Autism, Down’s syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and multiple disabilities through its special school located in Nirman Nagar-C. It was bettered the lives of 5000 families.

Services: It provides services like formal educational assessment, remedial classes for all, learning disabilities, therapies to improve fine and gross motor skills, behavioral management for children, parent counseling and psychological counseling for stress, anxiety, depression etc. It also provide occupational therapy and speech therapy. There is an adequate provision for all kind of therapies such as water pool for aquatic therapy, well equipped physiotherapy room, speech therapy room. They also have specialized trainer for all therapies they provide.

Special Education & Training in Activities of Daily Living (ADL) is given to make progress in child’s personal independence, social and cognitive abilities, verbal and nonverbal communication skills and adaptive skills; reduction of behavioral difficulties; and generalization of abilities across multiple environments.

Professional Staff: Disha Staff comprises of Special Educators, Psychologist, Physiotherapists, Occupational. The uniqueness of DISHA’s services is attributable to its ‘holistic approach’ in providing its services to the children with autism and other multiple disabilities by highly qualified and RCI certified professionals through application of state of the art therapies available under one roof at Disha Special School. Professionals at Disha include certified special educators, assistant teachers; speech, occupational, and physiotherapists; behavioral specialists; vocational resource specialists; art therapist; play therapist, dance therapist, computer teacher, counselor, visiting professionals; administrative staff and volunteers.

Criteria for Admission: Referrals for admission to our programs are mostly received from doctors, hospitals, mainstream schools, teachers, parents and other concerned NGOs. All referrals are subject to the approval of Disha’s Admission & Assessment Committee.

The students visited the centre and interacted with the staff, special educators and therapists. They also interacted with few students of the school to prepare their case studies.
