Report on Exhibition on Indigenous Learning Materials

An Exhibition on Indigenous Learning Materials was organized by Department of Home Science, The IIS University on 30th April 2017 wherein the B.Sc and M.Sc students of Home Science (Human Development) exhibited their respective models based on different themes of the exhibition. The venue for the exhibition was Srijan Hall of the IISU campus. The purpose of organizing the exhibition was to develop creativity among students and to develop knowledge of procedure of designing the relevant and age appropriate multipurpose learning material to make the lesson comprehensive and meaningful. The programme was organized under the guidance and supervision of Dr Nalini Totuka (Asst. Professor, The IIS University) and Ms. Archana Kumari (Asst. Professor, The IIS University).

Four corners were set based on the themes of the exhibition namely: early stimulation for infants, Early Childhood, Children with special needs and recreation for adolescents. In each corner there were approximately 25-30 learning materials made of indigenous materials were displayed. The “Early Stimulation “corner included learning materials related to sensory stimulus that should be given during infancy.

In the ‘Early Childhood’ corner students had displayed a variety of teaching learning  materials such as story books, rhyme books, pre-reading, pre-writing and pre-arithmetic books. Besides this there were many models to teach different concept to children.

The learning materials displayed in Children with Special Need counter were designed exclusively keeping in mind the need of disabled children. It included many tactile materials for blind children, play materials for their fine motor development and concepts in concrete form.

The last corner included the recreational activities ideas for adolescents such as gardening, games, painting etc.

The entries to the exhibition included a variety of teaching aids from different subjects like low-cost improvised aids, two and three dimensional models both static as well as working, flip–charts, graphic teaching aids etc. Prof. Pradeep Bhatnager (Dean of Faculty of Science),highly appreciated the efforts of the students and the staff.

Prof. Ila Joshi, Prof. Roopa mathur and many senior faculties visited the exhibition appreciated the innovative ideas and hard work of students. Many faculties who have their children at early childhood age were so impressed with the learning materials that they talked to the students about the methods of preparing and using those materials.

At the end of the Day the exhibition was Judged by Dr. Sunil Khurana, Principal, IIERD, Jaipur and  .. for the four best learning materials , one from each corner. Ms. Gunjan Jhamb, M. Sc, Sem II (Early Stimulation corner) , Ms. Shailja Jain B.Sc Sem VI, and Ms. Chetna Gumber, B.Sc sem IV (Early Childhood corner), Ms. Nandini Kumawat,  M.Sc Sem IV (Children with Special Needs corner) and Ms. Neha Agrawal, M.Sc,  sem II (Recreation for adolescentscorner) won the prize for best learning materials.

The Judge …while speaking on the occasion, stressed upon the significance of multisensory experiences which can be provided only through the audio-visual aids and suggested that students, should use novel and innovative techniques in preparing low-cost teaching aids in all the subjects.

Overall it was a great success as it helped the students in gathering new ideas and knowing the views of the experts.
