ONE DAY VISIT TO M.O.M KOTA, RAJASTHAN

The department of Home science organized a one- day visit to M.O.M, Kota, Rajasthan on 10th October 2018. A total of 32 students from B.Sc (Hons) HSc, B.Sc. (PC) electives and M.Sc (Foods and Nutrition) enrolled for the visit. Two teachers escorted the students for the visit, Reena Verma (Assistant Professor, Department of Home Science) and Vyoma Agarwal (Assistant Professor, Department of Home Science).

M.O.M. (Meal of the moment) is a food industry which is involved in the production of ready to prepare food products like kadhi chawal, idli sambhar, upma, poha, halwa etc. They mainly cater to airlines and working population in metro cities. Their products can be easily prepared with hot water in eight minutes.

We started off from the university campus at 7:00 a.m. in the morning and reached the factory at 1:00 p.m. we took a halt on the way for breakfast. On reaching the factory, we were greeted warmly by the staff and briefed about the hygiene practices followed. Accordingly, we wore lab coats, head covers, shoe covers, masks and sanitized our hands. First we were shown the stock area where all the ingredients were stored in hygienic and dry conditions. This was followed by the vegetable dehydration section where vegetables could be washed, sorted, peeled, chopped and dried for use in the products. Then was the roasting section for roasting of semolina, poha etc. this was followed by the main preparation area where all the foods were first prepared using conveyer pressure cookers, tempering added and later they were dried. These dried items were then conveyed automatically to the packaging section where machines did all the task of packaging. The packaging was done in three covers and quality control measures were followed at each and every step. Then we visited the quality lab which was equipped with the latest equipments for food testing. Then they provided us with samples of their new product, thai curry rice. Students filled feedback forms regarding their experience of the factory visit. We clicked pictures with the staff in the end.

From there we moved for lunch. After lunch, we visited the seven wonders park. Students had a good time there too. We started back from there at 5:00 p.m. and reached the university campus at 9:30 p.m. The students were picked by their parents.

The visit was a learning experience for the students. They learnt about the food industry which is gaining importance in the present times.
