Report – National Nutrition Week 2017 Celebrations

National Nutrition Week is celebrated from 1st Sept. 2017 to 7th Sept. 2017 across the nation. The theme for this year was “Optimal infant and young child feeding practices: Better nutrition.

Like the previous years, this year also Dept. of Home Science has celebrated National Nutrition Week by organizing various activities like Presentation on Dietary Guidelines for Indians, distribution of badges and bookmarks, guest lecture on “Infant and young child feeding practices and recipe making competition for preschool children.

Presentation on “Dietary Guidelines for Indians” was given by students of M Sc H Sc Foods and Nutrition Sem III on 30/8/17 from 9:30 am onwards in the AV Hall of the University Campus. The presentation was attended by approximately 100 students of  COSD, UG and PG courses under Department of Home Science.

On 4/9/17, the students of M Sc H Sc Foods and Nutrition Sem III have distributed the badges (based on the logo of the year) and the bookmarks prepared by the students of M Sc H Sc Foods & Nutrition Sem I. The badges were distributed to all the available faculty members of the University. The Bookmarks were distributed to the V. C., Deans, Professors and the faculty members of the Dept.

A guest lecture was organized on 6/09/17 based on the theme of the year “Optimal Infant and young child feeding practices: Better nutrition”. The resource person for the same was Dr Medhavi Gautam, Chief Dietitian, SDMH, Jaipur. She has focussed on importance of breastfeeding, importance of colostrum, mother and child bonding, importance of complimentary feeding, when to start? What to feed? How to feed?

Dr Gautam has also shared her personal experiences on treating treating malnourished children, introduction of complimentary feeding, dealing with rural and urban mothers while introducing complimentary feed. Overall it was a very interesting and enlightening lecture.

Last but not the least, a recipe making competition was organized on 7/09/17  for the students of Dept. of Home Science. The students were asked to prepare a recipe for preschool children. They were supposed to prepare 2 portions of the recipe and must present it along with a menu card and proper cutlery. There were 17 entries in all. The students have actively participated in the competition and have prepared delicious recipes. The winners of the recipe making competition were Garima Jain and Samridhi Mundra, both have shared the first prize.
