Extension Activity on “Parenting: Importance And Types Of Disciplinary Practices”

             Department of Home Science (Human Development),THE IIS University, Jaipur, conducted extension activity on  “Parenting , Its  Importance and Disciplinary Practices”  on urban slum women on 25th March, 2015 in Sanganer  Kachi  Basti,     Kalyanpura 1,Jaipur.
The extension activity was organized by Dr. Nalini Totuka, Assistant Professor and Archana Kumari, Asst. Professor, Department of HSc, Human         Development and  students of MSc HSc(HD). The programme aimed at equipping urban slum women knowledge regarding parenting and impact of various types of disciplinary practices. The rationale of the activity is to create awareness as well as counsel them about their problems on parenting.

Target Group & Venue:

This extension activity is for urban rural women mothers  of aged 20-50 yrs. This group is selected because mothers of young children and teenage have lots of problems in upbringing of their child.  Sanganer  Kachi Basti was selected as venue for the extension activity.

Materials & Methods Used: Nukkad Natak, posters , charts are used for the extension activity. Then in the end free conversation and counseling session was held for the queries of women. The activity started at 11:00 am with the Welcome address by Ms Manisha Tyagi  (MSc HSc(HD) IVth Semester) to all the urban slum women of the kalyanpura nagar, Sanganer, Jaipur.. The first presentation was given by Ms Ankita on importance of parenting followed by Dr. Nalini Totuka, where they discussed about Parenting, its importance, types, effects of parenting on children , reasons for  adopting different parenting types and its positive and negative aspects ,ways to handle it and other parenting problems.

It was followed by the NUKKAD NATAK on parenting practices by MSC HSC (HD) girls. In Nukkad natak, the students focused on parenting techniques. The students tried to convey various types of techniques like democratic, autocratic and permissive practices with the help of drama. The program highlight on the essential tips of parenting which will help urban slum women to deal with their children in their real life situations.

At the end, handouts on parenting tips was given to  the participants . The handout was on tips for parents and merits and demerits of parenting practices. The post counseling  session was conducted and all the questions or queries were answered by Dr. Nalini Totuka and Ms. Archana Kumari. The participants expressed that the activity was very informative and highly beneficial to them. The contents were fully covered and the methodology adopted was appropriate.

In the end small refreshments were given to all the participants i.e. Fruit, sweet and tea was given. Also participants were highly obliged and stated that this activity as a need of the hour. They are looking forward for many more sessions like this in near future.

Impact of the Activity: On the whole, it was an interactive session, with parents coming forward to talk about their children, their aims    & aspirations. They showed keen interest for learning more insights of the right parenting skills. The parents were from lower income group who misdirected their anger and daily frustrations towards children, and subjected them to daily beatings. The extension activity explained them how it was wrong, and gave them many other kinds of disciplining techniques through these workshops. The importance of children's education was drilled in, with examples close to life.
