Breast feeding week celebration 1-7th Aug 2017

  On the occasion of World Breastfeeding Week 2017 (1st - 7th August), Department of Home Science, organized a poster making competition on 1st August 2017 and  two guest lectures on 3rd August 2017.

The poster making competition was organized in collaboration with Indian Dietetics Association, Jaipur Chapter in which the students of the Department of Home Science, The IIS University, Jaipur and P.G. Department of Home Science, University of Rajasthan, Jaipur have participated. The posters were prepared on the theme given for World Breastfeeding Week, 2017 – “Sustaining Breastfeeding Together”. A total of 70 posters were prepared by the students on 1st aug. 2017 and were displayed in Srijan Hall on 3rd Aug. 2017. The posters were evaluated by Dr Alok Gupta, Former President, IAP, Jaipur; Dr Rajpreet Soni,Consultant Paediatrician, Jaipur  and Mr Shwet Goel, Head, Department of Fine Arts, The IIS University, Jaipur. The posters were evaluated critically for overall presentation,  content  and theme. The winners were Ms Anjali Kesarwani (First) (B Sc CND Electives Sem I), Ms Harshita Rohila (Second) (B Sc CND Electives Sem I), Ishita Sharma (Third) (B Sc CND Electives Sem V). Appreciation certificates were awarded to Anushka Thapliyal (B Sc (H) Home Science Sem III) and Priyanka Nagar (IDA, member, Jaipur Chapter).

 

Dr. Alok Gupta, MD, FIAP and Former President, IAP, Jaipur and Dr Rajpreet Soni, consultant physician and bone marrow transplant physician, Jaipur were the invited speaker.

Dr Alok Gupta started his presentation by showing the ancient sculptures of mother’s feeding the baby. He told that it is an age old tradition and has been given importance worldwide, so there are sculptures representing breastfeeding, He has shown images of magazines and other media related to importance of breastfeeding. He briefed the students about the importance of breast feeding and why it must be initiated within ½ to 2 hours of the birth.

Dr Rajpreet Soni emphasised on feeding of colostrum to the infant, as it is rich in omega-3 fatty acids that supports cognitive development and antibodies (IgA), which provide immunity to the baby. Breastfeeding also helps in building an emotional bond between the mother and the baby and gives a feeling of fulfilment to both. She discussed the composition of human milk, a wholesome food for newly born babies that need not be complemented by other formula milk, cow’s milk or water. It is beneficial over supplementary foods as it is economical, natural, healthy and eco-friendly. She has also focussed on the benefits of breastfeeding to the mother, baby, family, community and the environment.
