The post graduate students (Semester I) of Human Development Department visited the Babylon hospital on 9th October 2016. The students were escorted by Mrs. Archana kumari and reached around 11:00 a.m. The objective behind the visit was to observe the neonates in NICU, premature and small for date babies and also to learn the medical facilities provided to them and process of taking anthropometric measurements of neonates in the hospital.
Babylon Hospital is a specificity caring centre for children (ages 0-18 yrs.). Babylon Hospital was established in July-2007 with an aspiration to provide specialized & Comprehensive paediatric medical care to children. The Hospital is known for it’s critical care centre for newborn, toddler & adolescent. It is situated in the heart of the city, close to the commercial hub Raja Park.
The NICU at Babylon is a modern 20 bedded unit fully equipped to care for: Newborns with complex medical problems. The nursery is a level II plus unit & is staffed by an array of specially trained & certified pediatricians, nurses including neonatal nurse practitioners, therapists & & consultant specialists. NICU is equipped with siemens 300 neonatal ventilators; servo controlled Radiant Heat Warmers, CFL phototherapy units, CPAP, Infusion Pumps, Multipara System, Pulse Oxymeter. NICU team includes nurses trained in neonatal-care, a group of pediatricians with special training to work with new-born, always available 24 hrs. Care
The pediatrician in charge of NICU, Dr. Chanchal made us visit the NICU. Before showing them the neonates, she explained about the types of neonates come in NICU, importance of APGAR score and anthropometric measurement. She also talked about the reflexes in neonates and their importance.
The NICU was directed by neonatologists and staffed by nurses, therapists, physicians, ancillary disciplines and specialists. It included low birth weight, premature, small for dates, surgical and oxygen deprivation neonates.

There were babies who were suffering from serious health problems and thereby were on nasal feeding. There also a few babies whose birth weights were as low as 100 gms.

The doctor of the NICU told us in brief about the medical care and facilities which were given to the neonates. He also discussed about the major equipments that were basically used for the neonates which were incubator, ventilator, nasal cap, oxygen hood, cardio pulmonary monitor, blood pressure monitor, continuous airway pressure, bililights, endotracheal tube, intravenous line and pulse oximeter.
The visit finally came to an end around 12.30 p.m. with the thanks given to the doctors and nurses of the hospital by the teachers and the students.
