15 students of B.Sc H. Sc (H), Sem I, and EFE (Elective), Sem I of Department of Home Science visited the Babylon Hospital on 13th November 2024 at around 10:00 am.
The In-charge of NICU briefly explained the importance of APGAR score and the criteria required for admission to NICU such as birth defects, premature births, respiratory distress, infections, etc. medical care and facilities given to the neonates in NICU. This was followed by a brief explanation of the major equipment that are basically used for the neonates such as oxygen hood, acidic gas analyser, blood pressure monitors, pulse oximeter, ventilators, and CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) was explained to the students.
Physiotherapist Dr. Varun explained various treatment strategies used in NICU such as wear packs, hydrotherapy tanks, phototherapy, and their effects on neonatal health. He also explained how to take precautions before entering the NICU by following sanitization protocols such as wearing PPE kits, hand wash sanitization set, new shoe covers, latex slipper trades, and masks.
Dr. Anjali, from the department of Occupational therapy of the hospital, explained about the different reflexes present in infants after birth, development of senses in neonates and different activities that can be organised to improve the sensory experiences of infants. She discussed stimulation and how sensory interaction helps in the calming and handling of the child. She also demonstrated the infant's handling techniques like parachute reflex, cooperative neuromuscular facilitation techniques, etc. Importance of KMC (Kangaroo Mother Care) and health cards, used to assess diseases and disorders in neonates were also explained to students.
The visit provided students with valuable insights into the NICU, including the importance of the APGAR score, criteria for admission, medical care, and essential neonatal equipment. Additionally, experts explained physiotherapy and occupational therapy techniques, sanitization protocols, sensory development, and the significance of Kangaroo Mother Care in neonatal health.
