The Department of Home Science of the IIS (Deemed to be University) organized an extension activity on Girl Child Education on 7th November 2022 in Haziyawala community. The extension activity was organized by Dr. Archana kumari, Sr. Assistant Professor, Department of Home Science. 12 students of B.Sc (H) H.Sc Semester III, M.Sc students, Sem I and III participated in the activity.
Girl child education is a pivot for families, communities and societies today. Investing in girls’ education transforms communities, countries and the entire world. Girls who are able to get educated will be able to join the workforce, earn livelihoods, take care of their families and marry at a mature and responsible age. This way they can build better futures for themselves and their families. Keeping this in mind the activity was organized to create awareness about the importance of education the girl child and negative consequences of early marriage on girl child education.
Target Group & Venue:
The target group for this activity was parents of girl child in Haziawala community. The reason behind selecting this particular section was that the principal of the school informed that in this community girls get married at early age (12-14 years) and they do not pursue education after 5th class. Many of the girls want to achieve something in their life but cannot fulfil their dreams due to their marriage at early age. The get entangled in many household responsibilities and moreover this cycle repeats when they become mother of a girl child. So a urgent need was felt to conduct an extension activity in this area.
The activity was organized in the premises of Haziawala Government Primay school after taking the prior permission from the principal of the school. A total of 26 women and men of the community attended the activity.
Materials & Methods Used:
The whole activity was planned in three steps namely, Presentation, Role Play and Interaction with parents and their counseling. Materials were prepared accordingly like PPT, costumes, posters etc.
First a pictorial PPT was prepared to make the parents aware about consequences of early marriage, importance of girl child education, provisions from Government to facilitate girl child education etc.. This was presented by all students in Hindi mixed with local language.
This was followed by a role play performed by all students depicting a difference in two families- one who educate their girl child and one who get their daughter married and early age and do not educate her. All the students participated in this role play.
Lastly an interactive and counseling session was held. Surprisingly many parents especially women came out and shared their aspirations of becoming something in their life but could not become doe to their early marriage.
Impact of the Activity:
Our constitution accords equal rights to both men and women in every sphere of life, including the right to education. However the reality is very different. The girl child is most often than not given no education or in some cases only primary basic education. It was observed that the interactive session was very effective. Women interacted with students about their sufferings. Although most of them did not come out but their tears filled eyes were telling their stories. Many of them said that they are dependent on their head of the family but do not want their daughter suffer with this. The activity was ended with a hope that one day they will take stand in their family against early marriage and will take initiative in educating their girl child.
In the end small refreshments were given to all the participants. i.e. samosa and tea.
