Objective: 

The course will enable the student to -

  1. Understand importance of childhood years.
  2. Understand about various development in childhood.
  3. Understand psychology and  its application in child development.
  4. Know various types of early childhood education program.

  1. Childhood years – meaning, stages, characteristics, significance and development task of various stages of childhood years ( Early , middle and late childhood ), children’s rights.
  2. The course of physical growth – change in body size, proportion, composition.
  3. Motor, cognitive, language, socio- emotional development during various stages of childhood, factors affecting various developments.
  4. Bilingualism, handedness.
  5. Parenting in childhood, disciplinary practices and their influence on personality.

  1. Individual differences- meaning, types, importance.
  2. Memory- Meaning, process, types, causes of forgetting, factors affecting memory.
  3. Personality- meaning, traits, determinants, types, gender role identity, influences on gender stereotyping and gender role adoption.

  1. Socialization- Meaning, agencies- family, school and peer group – their importance and significance of socialization.
  2. Learning: Definition, types, learning curve, trial and error, classical conditioning-extinction, spontaneous recovery, generalization, discrimination, Operant conditioning- reinforcement, punishment, Cognitive learning- latent, observational, insight learning , laws, factors affecting learning.

  1.  Adjustment- Meaning, conflict, frustration, methods of adjustment, direct coping and mental mechanism
  2. Motivation- Meaning, characteristics, need, drive, incentive, types.

  1. Intelligence- definition, theories, types of intelligence tests, measurement of intelligence- mental age, intelligence quotient, determinants of intelligence.
  2. Behavioral problems in children-Definition, causes and prevention- hurting other children, destructive attitude, using abusive language, thumb  sucking, bedwetting, masturbation, refusal to eat, lying, stealing, running away, pica, truancy.
