Visit to Umang

The students of M.Sc, IVth semester and B Sc VIth semester visited the organization “Umang”, located in Kshipra Path, Mansarowar, Jaipur on 4th February 2017. A total of 12 students escorted with Archana Kumari, Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Development, Home Science, explored the information regarding its organization structure; welfare services provided; beneficiaries and other aspects.

The resource person who provided all the information regarding the organization to the students was Ms Meenakshi and Ms. Sharmila, teaching in the organization.

Umang is an initiative that strives for an inclusive society that provides equal opportunity for all, by enhancing the quality of life of individuals with various disabilities. This welfare organization works for the development of  skills for employment of persons with disabilities, empowering individuals and their families to bring about positive changes and  advocate the need for realisation of the rights of persons with disabilities. It also contributes to the knowledge base through continuous community intervention, research and documentation.

The organisation works towards making a positive change in the lives of people with disability by enabling them to achieve their potential and mainstreaming them to become self-reliant and participate in the society.

Umang is supported by one of the most qualified and highly experienced team of experts in Rajasthan. The specialised team consists of special educators, qualified academic teachers, physiotherapists, speech and language experts, occupational therapists, psychologists, artists and theatre experts and qualified vocational trainers. Other experts include counselors, neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, pediatricians etc.

Umang has a diverse range of services to enable holistic development of children with special needs. Every child is different and therefore needs a customized approach to learning. At Umang, we outline a specific growth plan called IEP (Individual Education Plan) for every child according to his/her needs. Our basic structure of services include: Centre for Special Education, Sports, Leisure and Recreation, Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, Home Management and Counseling,  Advocacy and Awareness and Vocational Training and Employment.

After getting basic information about the functioning of Umang the students visited the classes and interacted with the students. They assembled the students in a big hall and conducted an activity on “what happened to our letter” through Role Play. Students participated enthusiastically in writing and posting their own letters.
