The post graduate students of Human Development Department visited the Senior Citizen Forum, Mansarovar on the 8th August, 2015. The old age center was established on 22nd November, 1992 which presently accommodates 675 old people and 15 workers. The students were escorted by their teacher Ms. Chanchal Sinha and reached this center around 11:30 a.m. with the prior information. Mr. Ramnani, the head of the old age center made the arrangements for conducting the activity.
The students were directed to sit in a hall having chairs arranged in a circular form. The hall also included a small temple in the center and playing items such as chess and carom board in the corner
The students conducted a recreational activity named “Passing the Parcel” with around twenty elderly people. This activity began with a round of introduction of the students and teacher to the old people (participants) and also an explanation of the rules of the game by a student. This activity gave each participant an opportunity to discuss about either social, political, religious issues, memorable events, and how should youth take care of old people, family problems and strength and weakness etc.
The activity not only dealt with an expression of views of elderly about specific topics but it also included an entertaining element which was in the form of singing songs by a few participants and the students. In the end of this session the winner of the game was awarded the prize in the form of a pen.
Thus, this activity lead to an involvement of all the aged people present in the center, who found this game relaxing and entertaining. The members of the old age center were glad to meet the young crowd and also requested them to conduct such type of refreshing activities more frequently.
The P.G. students also visited the physiotherapy center which was located in the vicinity of the Senior Citizen Forum, where a well trained physiotherapist, Dr. Heena gave a handful of information about the common health and fitness problems faced by the elderly and also imparted knowledge about its treatment.
Finally, the visit came to an end around 1:00 p.m. with a motto of thanks given by the students.
