On the occasion of World Breastfeeding Week 2016 (1st - 7th August), Department of Home Science, The IIS University, Jaipur, in collaboration with Indian Dietetic Association, Jaipur Chapter organized a guest lecture on 2nd August, 2016. The speaker was Dr. Nupur Hooja, Unit Head, SMS Medical College, Jaipur. Dr Hooja briefed the students about the importance of breast feeding and why it must be started within ½ to 2 hours of the birth of new born. She discussed the composition of human milk, a wholesome food for newly born babies that need not be complemented by other formula milk, cow’s milk or water. Dr Nupur emphasised feeding of colostrum to the infant, as it is rich in omega-3 fatty acids that supports cognitive development and antibodies (IgA), which provide immunity to the baby. Breastfeeding also helps in building an emotional bond between the mother and the baby and gives a feeling of fulfilment to both. It is beneficial over supplementary foods as it is economical, natural, healthy and eco-friendly.
The guest lecture was followed by display of posters prepared by the students of the Department of Home Science, and various other departments of The IIS University, Jaipur and by the P.G.
