Genetics
Unit- I                                                                                                                                   16 Hrs
a. Principles of genetics- Cell organization, mitosis, meiosis, mendelism- linkage and cross over, gene- mutation.)
b. Meaning & interaction of heredity and environment in determining intelligence, personality and behavior- studies of identical fraternal and adopted twins.

Genes and Chromosomes
a. Genes and chromosomes- Structure of DNA, number and structure variation.
b. Genetic Disorders, diagnosis and treatment- Human Karyotype.
c. Hereditary diseases/ gene linked syndromes- Sickle cell anemia, hemophilia, PKU, autism,   alzheimer’s, apert, sticklers and ushers syndrome, cystic fibrosis, Huntington, spina bifida, tay- sachs.Chromosomal variation and sex  linked syndrome-Fragile X, XYY, down, cat cry, turners, klinefelter syndrome.

Counselling
a. Investigation of genetic disorders ( pedigree construction and its analysis),  prenatal screening methods.
b. Genetic counseling-need, essential qualities of genetic counselor.
c. Direct and indirect counseling.
d. Prevention of genetic disorders and gene therapy.

Treatment and Factors
a. Assisted reproduction- Invtro fertilization and test tube baby, surrogate mothers- legal and ethical issues.
b. Factors causing infertility- Stress, problems in ovulation, blocked or scarred fallopian tubes, endo- metriosis and low sperm count, drugs, alcohol- treatment

Postpartum Depression
a. Post partum depression-Types, causes and treatment.
b. Post partum infection.
c. Maternal and infant mortality- Causes and treatment 
d. Indian practices during pregnancy and post partum period- a scientific concern.
