 9^th Ped Gastro Conference : A Report

Students from the department of Home Science, The IIS University attended the 9^th Ped Gastro Conference organized by Santokhba Durlabhji Memorial Hospital, Jaipur and Indian Academy of Pediatrics at Santokhba Durlabhji Memorial Hospital, Jaipur on 16^th Jly, 2017.

The seminar started at 9:10am with the lamp lighting ceremony. The first session comprised a talk on ‘National Advice in Common Diarrhoel Situations’ by Dr. R.K.Gupta, which focused on the various aspects related to diarrhea, like causes, signs and symptoms, medication, their doses and diet. He emphasized inculcation of good habits early in life to prevent diarrhea.  

The second session included a talk on ‘Functional Constipation – how to get the tough going’ by Dr.Vishnu Biradar. His talk highlighted prevalence and causes of constipation and how beneficial are Indian toilets than the Western toilets for easy evacuation.

The third speaker, Dr. John Mathai briefed the delegates about Neonatal Cholestasis. It was a very interesting and interactive session on the problem of stones among neonates. The session was followed by a Tea break.

At 11:00 am there was another session on ‘Follow up of celiac disease and screening of family member’ by Dr.S.K.Yachha. He discussed about all the aspects of celiac disease like causes, signs and symptoms, dietary management, care of the patient and treatment.

After that there was a short session on ‘Chronic Abdominal Pain’ by Dr. John Mathai followed by a panel discussion. Various questions were asked by the audience and they were answered patiently by the panelist.  The discussion continued for an hour followed by lunch.

Later, various interesting videos on endoscopy were shown by Dr. Vishnu Biradar. At 3:40 pm there was a session on ‘Corrosive Intake –Role of a Pediatrician’ by Dr. Vishnu Biradar, wherein he explained various ways by which children consume corrosive agents and cause damage to them. He focused on the measures to be taken to control the same.

The next session was on ‘Food Allergy’ by Dr. C. B. Dasgupta, and covered different kinds of food allergies and ways, and how one can get rid of them. He also explained the difference between food allergy and food intolerance.

The one day seminar was really very helpful for the students as it provided knowledge about various pediatric health issues. All the speakers were very impressive and answered the queries of the students.
