A guest lecture was organized on “Nutrigenomics: An Interdisciplinary approach towards healthy life” for the students of M Sc Home Science (Foods and Nutrition) Sem II and Sem IV. The speaker was Dr Vinayak H Patel from P. G. Department of Home Science, Sardar Patel University, Vallabh Vidhyanagar, Gujarat.
Nutrigenomics is a new term and it focuses on the relationship between gene and nutrition. It is the study of the effect of genetic variation on the interaction between diet and health. He has focussed on the genetic makeup of a baby. He talked about Human Genome Project and Veriome Project. How defect in one gene can affect the life of individual?
He explained the replication and transcription of RNA and genobiotics. He focussed on how change in dietary pattern and habits can help us to lead a healthy life and delay the onset of hereditary disorders like hypertension, diabetes mellitus, CVD etc. He has very well explained the role of genes and ways to change diet for healthy life style.
