Objective: 

 

This course will enable the students to

1.      Understand the development during prenatal  period and infancy .

2.      Understand the methods of studying humans in various age groups.

Pre Natal Development and care .

  • Genes and chromosomes, conception.
  • Signs and symptoms of pregnancy.
  •  stages of pre natal development.
  • Care of expectant mother.
  • Overview of birth process.
  • Birth complications.
  • Environmental and hereditary factors influencing  prenatal development , genetic diseases, genetic counselling, hazards during prenatal period- signals and remedial measures.

Care of Neonate (0-4 weeks)

  •       Normal new born and premature- Characteristics, problems of premature infant.
  •       Post natal care of mother and child- minor ailments.
  •       Reflexes in new born and their importance.
  •       Adjustments of neonate.
  •       Capabilities of neonate.
  •       Immunization schedule- essential and non essential vaccines.

Infancy (0-2 years)

   Developmental tasks  and milestones of infancy

  •  Physical and motor development, factors influencing infant’s development.
  •  Language development- Components of language, acquisition of language ability, prelinguistic and linguistic speech, motherese, factors affecting language development

Socio-emotional Development- Concept of socialization

  •      Theories of socio emotional development(one each)
  •      Classification of emotions and their development in infancy.
  •       Early Stimulation- Meaning and importance, methods of early stimulation.
  •       Stages of infant attachment, stranger anxiety.

Methods of Human Study – Observations, interviews, questionnaires,

      experimental methods, projective techniques, clinical approach, sociometric techniques,  standardized tests longitudinal and cross sectional survey and case studies- Types, method of conduction, merits and  demerits
