CNE on Importance of Breakfast

REPORT Of CNE ON “IMPORTANCE OF BREAKFAST”

A CNE was attended by the students of M.Sc. Home science (Foods and Nutrition) Previous year escorted by a faculty member of the department. The topic was “IMPORTANCE OF BREAKFAST” organized on 19th July 2014 by Kelloys India Limited and Indian Dietetic Association, Jaipur Chapter.

The speakers were Dr Malathi Shivaramakrishnan, Research Director, Research Centre, Nirmala Niketan College of Home Science, University of Mumbai, Mumbai and Dr Madhvi Triveni Associate Director, Kelloggs Nutrition.

Both of them have shared the result of a study conducted by them in 4 metropolitan cities ie New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai. The study was entitled “                                 . The study was focussed on 4 target groups ie less than 12 years of age, 13-15 years, 16-17 years and 18+ years.

They reported that breakfast is the most likely skipped meal. The energy intake of people residing in New Delhi was good as they generally consumed Parantha which is full of carbohydrates and fat.

They have also discussed about the benefits of breakfast like

  • It fuels empty stomach
  • Boosts mental performance
  • Boosts the nutrient intake
  • Helps in keeping weight gain away
  • Improves metabolism
  • Eaters are happier

An Ideal breakfast must be

  • Low in fat content
  • High in carbohydrate
  • High in fibre content
  • Fortified with vitamins and minerals
  • Eaten with milk
